  • Mrs. Randy Bernstein, Math chair, joined Ma'ayanot in 2011 after having taught all mathematical subjects, from Algebra I through Calculus, at the Bronx High School of Science for over thirty years. Mrs. Bernstein’s skill and experience are manifest in the clarity and confidence with which she explains mathematic concepts. She has also taken school leadership roles throughout her career, including serving as a mentor for teachers and as a member of the Best Practices Committee at Bronx High School of Science. Mrs. Bernstein holds a B.A. in Computer Science from SUNY Buffalo and an M.A. in Mathematics Education from Queens College.

Mrs. Joyce Heller

  • Mrs. Joyce Heller teaches all levels of math and is the Director of Ma’ayanot’s annual musical comedy production. Prior to joining Ma’ayanot’s Math department in 2006, Mrs. Heller taught math at Glen Rock High School for twenty years, including nine years as Chair of the department.  An outgoing, multi-talented person, Mrs. Heller won the Governor’s Award for Teacher of the Year in 2003, she co-authored the Advanced Placement Statistics Resource Book for D & S Publishing, she has directed numerous musical comedy shows in schools and summer camps throughout the area, and, at various points throughout her career, she has served as an adviser to Student Government, the Math Team and the Playbill Club.   She has a B.A. in Math and an M.A. in Math Education, both from City College of New York

Mrs. Adele Katzenstein

  • Mrs. Adele Katzenstein works as a Learning Specialist in Ma'ayanot's Learning Center and teaches Algebra, Biology lab, English, and Jewish Philosophy. In addition to working at Ma'ayanot, Mrs. Katzenstein maintains a private tutorial practice and is a Parent Trainer for EPIC (Every Parent Influences Children) in Rockland, NY. Mrs. Katzenstein also has extensive experience in special education, having served as a Special Education Teacher for PTACH, Yeshiva Bais Mikroh Boys School, and Kadima Learning Center, and as a Comprehension Skills Instructor at Bais Malka Girls School. Mrs. Katzenstein earned a B.A. in Education from Baruch College and a Master's in Education from Walden University.

Ms. Dina Klapper

  • Dina Klapper is a welcome new addition to the Ma'ayanot faculty as a teacher of Algebra II and Geometry. She has a M.S. in Mathematics Education (5-12) from Touro College and a B.S. in Management from the University of Massachusetts in Boston. Previously, she taught middle school mathematics at Ben Porat Yosef. Ms. Klapper also served in the Israeli Defense Forces as a Sergeant/Instructor for the Education Unit. She is a Certified Personal Trainer.

Ms. Rebecca Mintz

  • Rebecca Mintz joins the Ma’ayanot faculty as a member of the Math and Science departments. She will also be a mehanekhet for 11th grade. Ms. Mintz holds a M.S.W. from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College and a B.A. from Stern College in Philosophy and Jewish Studies. She has been a Fellow at Mechon Hadar, where she engaged in immersive study of Jewish texts, and at Avodah: The Jewish Service Corps Fellowship, where she studied and analyzed tools for combatting poverty and building community in New York City. She has supervised the care of adults with developmental disabilities and mental illness at HASC Residential Services and has worked in a wide array of social services.

Dr. Sofya Nayer

  • Dr. Sofya Nayer recently joined the Ma’ayanot faculty to teach AP Calculus. She earned both a B.S. and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Moscow, and an Ed.D. from Teacher’s College at Columbia University. Dr. Nayer is a tenured Professor of Mathematics at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), where she has been teaching math courses, including Basic Skills, Probability and Statistics, and the full Calculus sequence (Calculus I, II and III),  for over three decades.  During her tenure at BMCC she also mentored students in planning and conducting special research projects, many of which have been presented at professional conferences.

Mr. David Tanke

  • Mr. David Tanke teaches Algebra and Pre-Calculus. He earned a BS in Mathematics from Stony Brook University and an MS in Mathematics from Adelphi University. Mr. Tanke brings a wealth of teaching experience to Ma'ayanot as he has taught middle and high school math for over three decades, including 23 years at Scarsdale High School in New York.
